Microsoft Loses Stalwarts; Yahoo recruits Lamkin...

The cyber world is a place of continuous change. Here new developments happen almost everyday. Currently a few new developments that have taken place in this cyber zone are centered on Google, which is the most popular search engine. Two of its main stalwarts have resigned. They are Douglas Bowman, and Priti Choksi. The former was a designer with the search engine and the latter was one of the directors of strategic partner development.

The reason behind Bowman’s resignation was the sites too much dependency on data. In his website Bowman has said that the search engine had a “design philosophy that lives or dies strictly by the sword of data.” He thought that this too much dependency on data has made it difficult for the company to make “any daring design decisions.”

Currently Bowman is with Twitter and he has joined this social media site as a Creative Director. According to his blogpost he is gearing up to satisfy the wide range of Twitter users with his creative vision that will give the site a look that is a combination of simplicity and user-friendly features. A person who has worked with Wired before joining Google it was a tough task to sacrifice creativity and bow to the somewhat boring practical data centrism.

This once again raises the age-old fight between pragmatism and creativity. This also shows that in the Internet world it often becomes quite difficult to balance the two. At the same time, some companies have to understand that to bring more variety and show more imagination they have to take risks that might not be supported by dry data.

Priti Choksi, on the other hand, has joined Facebook and from now on she will be the head of business development in that social media site. It was Ms Choksi who played a great role in distributing the Google Toobar. It is also sad that another reason behind her leaving Google is the lack of development in the company’s stock for past two years. She will be able to own some private share in her current company.

The cyber world also saw another search engine major Yahoo recruiting Bryan Lamkin who was an executive with Adobe earlier. He is going to replace Scott Dietzen. Lamkin will join Yahoo as an SVP. He will handle the application products department.

But the most significant news is that of the departure of Greg Linden from Microsoft. The reason of his leaving lies in the decision that the company took to wrap up a large part of its Live Labs. Finally, Mike Jones too has joined MySpace as the COO of the company. He was an executive in AOL.

All these may seem like too much for one weekend but this is how the things unfold in the cyber space. Most of the times they are sudden and unpredictable. That is why it needs more of our attention. The Internet and the search engines churn out revenues worth in billions and that is why a continuous watch on them is a must. So, we know what else is developing.

Indian SEM Industry Gears Up for a Bright Future...

There are various Indian companies that are quite well known for their expertise in Search Engine Optimization (SEO). Thanks to these companies India has been able to create its own place in the Search Engine Marketing (SEM). This marketing is actually dependent on three main factors and SEO is one of them. India is one of the popular countries for outsourcing SEO tasks and this has helped its SEM industry to grow by leaps and bounds. In 2008 Internet and Mobile Association of India conducted a survey projecting an investment of US$225 Million in the Indian market by the year 2009-2010.

The major clients who offshore their projects to India are USA, UK, Spain, some South East Asian nations, and many countries of the Middle East. This is one industry that still provides India a steady business. The reasons behind this success rate are; English literacy, number of graduates, exposure to Internet service, and a clear idea about the required job.

The percentage of search engine users globally was 7 percent in the year 2007. This has increased and that can be seen from the growing popularity of search engine Google that has recently become the number one brand in the world. Moreover, on the international front the 10 million dollars investment received by Conductor, a company providing SEO solutions, proves that SEO and SEM are really recession proof.

Right now 85% of searches are dependent on SEO and that is why Indian companies who excel in this field will definitely get benefited. That is why many new graduates are trying to enter the industry as SEO professionals. This also justifies the claim that by the year 2013 the SEM industry will see a rise of 13 percent.

In the year 2007 the total number of Internet users was 29 million and last year this figure rose to 40 million. This shows a substantial increase of 19%. That is why various Indian companies are so encouraged to make their online product marketing process more aggressive. The companies falling in this league include big names like; ICICI Bank, HDFC, Taj Hotels, and Godrej that can prosper due to SEM.

Moreover, among the 29 million only 35% went for Internet searches in 2004 but in 2007 this percentage increased to almost 75%. In 2007, only eight percent people used the Internet to check travel status and make reservations but this percentage climbed to almost 80 in 2008. This makes the future of SEO look really bright. Better SEO will mean more growth in SEM industry.

Need for Multilingual Skills to expand BPO Industr...

Currently the worth of the Indian BPO industry is $4 billion and most of their businesses, about $2.2 billion, have come from the USA. However, with the expansion of the BPO industry various Indian multinational companies are now trying to set up their base in European and Latin American nations. This is the reason that the need for workers who can speak multiple languages with equal fluency has increased drastically. And unfortunately this is one area where the Indian BPO faces some serious challenges as it lacks workers who have that kind of linguistic skills.

There was a time when recruiting people who are fluent in English guaranteed good business to the BPO companies. But now they have understood that in order to increase their revenues during this period of recession they have to concentrate on the European market as well.

Considering the current situation companies will do better by hiring people who are fluent in Spanish. This will help them not only to secure prime businesses in Latin America and Spain but also counter any competition that might arise from the Philippine BPO sector. Spanish is spoken in 20 countries including Latin American ones like Chile, and Mexico. As Philippines have a good number of Spanish speaking people in its workforce, Indian MNCs desperately need its workers to learn this language in order to survive in this competitive market.

This is the reason why various companies are now training their employees in Spanish languages. There are now Spanish teaching centers in Indian metros like Mumbai, Bangalore, and Delhi.

Apart from Spanish, employers are looking for people who can converse well in French, German, Russian, Dutch, and Italian. Companies like Oracle, Infosys, Hewlett Packard, and IBM are recruiting such people who are well versed in any of the above languages apart from English.
